Marco Milia, Rome 1976

Marco Milia graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he specialized in sculpture. His practice moves fluidly between installation and drawing, investigating the perception and construction of space through large-scale, site-specific interventions.

A defining element of his work lies in its relational dimension: the viewer is not a passive observer, but an active participant, invited to engage with the work both physically and perceptually. Milia’s installations establish immersive environments in which the body, architecture, and surrounding context enter into a dynamic dialogue.

His formal language is marked by geometric rigor and the distinctive use of blue and transparent polycarbonate. Through the interaction with light, these materials generate shifting reflections and luminous effects, activating a network of spatial relationships that redefine both natural and historical settings.

Notable site-specific projects include “In aere in aquis” (2013) at the Museum of the Roman Houses of the Celio, documented by Claudio Abate; his residency at the Art Students League of New York with “Crystal Time” (2014); “The Eighth Day” (2015), presented in the octagonal hall of the Gentileschi complex in Carrara during Marble Week; “Habitat” (2017) in the cloisters of the Church of Sant’Agostino in Montalcino; and “Waterway” (2018), a 45-meter installation in the Church of San Francesco in Acquapendente.

More recent works (2019–2022) include “We Are All Connected” at the Fondazione Luca e Katia Tomassini within the Vetrya campus in Orvieto, a large-scale structure of polycarbonate rings enveloping the building; the permanent installation “Molecula” at Coscioni Lab in Rome; interventions in the courtyard of Palazzo Collacchioni at the Castle of Capalbio; and “Waves” (2022) at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, a suspended polycarbonate form cutting diagonally across the courtyard space.

Alongside his sculptural practice, Milia has developed a parallel research in contemporary artist jewelry. In 2007, his work entered the permanent collection of the Museo degli Argenti at Palazzo Pitti in Florence, within the galleries dedicated to contemporary jewelry. He has also designed a jewelry line for Swarovski Italy.

His works are held in public museums, foundations, and private collections.
